Where is Azusa Rock located?

Azusa Rock is located in the City of Azusa, in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

When did mining begin at Azusa Rock?

Operations have been ongoing at the Azusa Rock site since the 1920's. Since that time, several different rock producers have continued to operate the site, including Vulcan Materials today.

Can the City force the closure of Azusa Rock?

No. Azusa Rock operates within the requirements and standards of its conditional use permits. Vulcan Materials not only owns the quarry but also the land on which the quarry is located.

How long is Azusa Rock permitted to mine?

Vulcan Materials has an existing entitlement that allows for mining on the site until 2038.

Do any laws govern the mining operation at Azusa Rock?

Yes! A wide variety of federal, state and local laws apply to the operation of our construction materials business. In fact, Vulcan must meet the ongoing rigorous requirements of various government agencies that oversee these laws including, among others, laws relating to safety, health, environmental and land use requirements.

How many acres comprise Azusa Rock?

Azusa Rock is 270 acres. Vulcan Materials is mining 190 of the 270 acres.

Can Vulcan Materials mine all the acres at Azusa Rock?

Yes. Vulcan Materials has vested rights to mine all 270 acres of its site. Because of Vulcan's commitment to the city, it has agreed to mine only 190 of its 270 acres.

What are the days and times of operation?

Azusa Rock is permitted to operate Monday thru Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Most mining activities typically conclude by 6:00 p.m.
