NewsVulcan Materials Company FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE VULCAN MATERIALS COMPANY, WESTERN DIVISION RECEIVES GOVERNOR'S December 13, 2006 (Los Angeles, CA) - Vulcan Materials Company, Western Division today announced that it has received the Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for its innovative work on the Colton Dunes Conservation Bank, in partnership with the Riverside Land Conservancy and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. The honor was presented at an awards ceremony in Sacramento on December 5. "We are thrilled to receive this honor," said Mike Linton, vice president of Properties and Land Development for Vulcan's Western Division. "The Conservation Bank is a creative response to a complex environmental problem. We're proud of the success of this long-term conservation effort and are gratified for being recognized for our accomplishments in protecting the region's unique ecosystem." The Conservation Bank provides an innovative means for developers to mitigate the impacts of their projects on species or habitats through immediate habitat conservation. The 150-acre Colton Dunes effort is the largest protected area of critical habitat for the endangered Delhi Sands flower-loving fly, a pollinating insect that plays an important role in the region's ecosystem. The protection of this habitat is the most significant conservation measure taken to aid the recovery of the Delhi fly since it was emergency listed in the Endangered Species Act of 1993. The Delhi fly's only known habitat is in a small region in which the Conservation Bank is located. The Bank is conserved in perpetuity through a conservation easement held by the Riverside Land Conservancy and an endowment providing permanent habitat maintenance funded by Vulcan Materials Company. The annual Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award program is California's highest and most prestigious environmental honor.
