FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VULCAN MATERIALS COMPANY, WESTERN DIVISION
JOINS CALIFORNIA CLIMATE ACTION REGISTRY

December 18, 2006 (Los Angeles, CA) - Vulcan Materials Company, Western Division today announced that it has joined the California Climate Action Registry, a distinguished group of businesses and environmental leaders committed to addressing climate change.  As part of the rigorous voluntary program, the Western Division of the nation's largest aggregates manufacturer will annually track, report and certify its California operations greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

"This is another opportunity for Vulcan to make a difference," said Ron McAbee, president of Vulcan's Western Division.  "Vulcan's commitment to address greenhouse gas emissions through the Registry is consistent with our commitment to social responsibility, environmental stewardship and promoting sustainability.  Joining the Registry helps us accurately measure our progress and underscores our belief that protecting the environment and growing the economy can go hand in hand."

"Vulcan has built a strong reputation as a leader in environmental stewardship, and participating in the Registry speaks to the company's commitment to taking real action on climate change," said Diane Wittenberg, president of the California Climate Action Registry.  "We appreciate that Vulcan is the first aggregates producer in the state to join the California Climate Registry and we applaud Vulcan for their dedication to the environment."

The Registry, created by the California legislature in 2000, is a non-profit public/private partnership that helps companies and organizations throughout the United States to track, publicly report and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.  The results are independently certified by third-parties to ensure compliance with Registry protocols and standardization across participants and sectors.  The Registry has been widely recognized as a gold standard for public reporting of greenhouse gases.
