NewsVulcan Materials Company FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vulcan Materials Company, Western Division Named Climate Action Leader February, 2008 (Los Angeles, CA) - Vulcan Materials Company, Western Division, was designated as a Climate Action Leader by the California Climate Action Registry (The Registry) following verification of the Company's 2006 inventory report. Vulcan is the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates, which are used in building roads, bridges, schools and just about everything else that needs a foundation. Over the past several years, increasingly U.S. companies have begun to voluntarily track greenhouse gas emissions, as part of their corporate sustainability programs. The Registry was originally established by California statute as a non-profit voluntary registry for greenhouse gas emissions, which has an established protocol widely accepted by state air regulators. "We commend Vulcan for their hard work on voluntarily measuring and publicly reporting their greenhouse gas footprint and for their participation in the California Climate Action Registry's rigorous program," said Gary Gero, Interim President, California Climate Action Registry. "We look forward to continuing to work with Vulcan and their efforts to take action on climate change." Reporting greenhouse gases to The Registry is just one part of a larger initiative underway at Vulcan to address the challenges of climate change. During development of its greenhouse gas inventory, Vulcan began to explore opportunities to quantify its contributions to reducing greenhouse gases at its facilities. For example, the design and construction of its newest aggregate plant in Corona, California uses a downhill conveyor that generates electricity as it carries the rock to a processing plant below. According to Brian Anderson, Director, Environmental Management, Regulatory Affairs and Sustainable Development for Vulcan's Western Division, at its planned operating efficiency, the electricity created by the plant's downhill conveyor will result in more than 180,000 pounds of greenhouse gas savings annually. "This project is a testament to Vulcan's commitment to the environment, and a wonderful example of a sustainable practice that directly benefits the community by providing a material that is in severe shortage throughout the state," Anderson said. "With the Governor's goal to rebuild California's transportation infrastructure, our Corona plant is the hallmark of a state-of-art aggregate production facility."
