FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vulcan Materials Submits Plan to Enhance Appearance at Azusa Rock January 5, 2009 (Azusa, CA) - Vulcan Materials Company, the owner and operator of Azusa Rock submitted an application for a revised reclamation plan to the City of Azusa which will dramatically improve the appearance of the operation. To present the proposed new plan enhancements and answer any questions, Vulcan Materials has scheduled the first of several community meetings for the project. The first project open house is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Azusa Readiness Center (Corner of Todd Avenue and Sierra Madre Avenue) in the City of Azusa. "Since acquiring Azusa Rock in 1999, Vulcan Materials has remained committed to enhancing the appearance of the project. By submitting this application to the city for approval, we hope to be able to incorporate state-of-the-art reclamation techniques that will significantly improve current and future contouring and re-vegetation of the property," said Jim Gore, Azusa Rock Project Manager. To dramatically enhance the appearance of Azusa Rock, the proposed reclamation plan requires "micro-benching," which will allow Vulcan Materials to replace 40 foot benches, with 12 to 24 inch benches, creating more natural drainages and contouring of all future and existing mined areas. Under the proposed plan, no additional acres will be mined at Azusa Rock. The plan submitted to the City will substitute 80 acres on the Eastside, acres that are currently approved for mining, with 80 acres on the Westside of Azusa Rock. Azusa Rock is comprised of 270 acres, all of which are located within the City of Azusa. Vulcan Materials is confident of our rights under California law to mine the entire property. The existing reclamation plan can only be changed when a new reclamation plan is submitted by Vulcan Materials and approved by the City of Azusa. "After a thoughtful planning process, taking into consideration the input from the city’s Citizen’s Congress and General Plan, the proposed plan is one step closer to becoming a reality. We look forward to working with the City of Azusa and the community to ensure that the appearance of Azusa Rock is enhanced. In addition, the proposed plan will continue our commitment to protecting the environment and restoring one of our community’s greatest treasures, Fish Creek," said Gore. Azusa Rock produces aggregate materials which are used to construct highways, homes, hospitals, and other important infrastructure projects essential to our region’s quality of life. ### Vulcan Materials Company, a member of the S&P 500 Index, is the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates and a leading producer of asphalt mix and concrete in California.
